Epidemiology Reports

Current hospitalizations are the number of hospital beds currently occupied by individuals with COVID-19.

Ventilated hospitalizations are the number of hospitalized individuals with COVID-19 who are using machines to help them breathe. This includes people in the Emergency Room who have been put on a breathing machine while waiting for a hospital bed. Due to a data reporting error, the number of individuals receiving mechanical ventilation was less than previously reported from February 1, 2022 through July 22, 2022. This error was corrected as of July 25, 2022.

New cases are the total number of people with COVID-19 that the state learned about yesterday, from 12 am to 11:59 pm. Results reported following a weekend or holiday include all new cases since the last update.

Total case counts include all COVID-19 cases reported to the state from the start of the pandemic through the prior day. COVID-19 cases may sometimes be removed from the total count if they are found to be double-counted, live outside of New Mexico, or their test result is not confirmed. People with COVID-19 who are in prison at any federal or state facility in New Mexico are included.

New deaths have not been reported before and are reported when death certificates are received and reviewed. The receipt and review process can take several days to weeks, so new reported deaths may include deaths from more than 30 days ago.

Total deaths are the total number of people who have died from COVID-19 in New Mexico since the beginning of the pandemic. From May 12, 2020 through February 9, 2021 12 COVID-19 deaths were reported publicly following notification of a COVID-related death from a facility to NMDOH before receipt of the death certificate.  Because death reporting is based on death certificates and we did not subsequently receive a death certificate associated with these individuals, we are removing these 12 deaths as of June 13, 2022 from the cumulative death count for COVID-19 deaths in NM.

New tests are the number of COVID-19 tests from a laboratory or medical facility that confirms current COVID-19 infection (molecular [PCR, NAAT] and antigen tests). All test results received by the state since the last update are counted. Results reported following a weekend or holiday include all new tests since the last update. All facilities in New Mexico and some out-of-state facilities that have tested New Mexico residents report results using secure connections (electronic or fax). Home-based test results are not included.

The data reported in this weekly update (every Tuesday, except holidays) may not match the numbers that are reported in the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) press releases, weekly reports, and/or the NMDOH COVID-19 data dashboard. This may be due to variation in the date and time of data extraction from NM-EDSS, corrections after quality assurance review, and differences in the exclusion criteria. Also, data reported within the most recent 7 days are incomplete as we continue to receive data, remove duplications, and complete other quality assurance activities.  All data are from residents of New Mexico and include those in prison at any New Mexico federal or state facility.

Vaccines administered includes all COVID-19 vaccinations administered from the start of the pandemic through Monday of each week.

Primary series includes those who have completed a primary vaccination series consisting of 2 doses of the Pfizer (3-doses of Pfizer vaccine for those aged 6months-4years), Moderna or Novavax vaccine, or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Some may have had an additional or booster vaccine as well.

Primary series with a bivalent booster includes those who have completed a primary vaccination series AND have received an updated Pfizer or Moderna bivalent booster.

Total cases include all COVID-19 cases reported to the State from the start of the pandemic through Monday of each week. COVID-19 cases may sometimes be removed from the total count if they are found to be double-counted, live outside of New Mexico, or their test result is not confirmed.

Cases per 100,000 is the number of new COVID-19 cases reported in the stated 7 days, per 100,000 residents.

Total hospitalizations include hospital admissions with COVID-19 reported to the State from the start of the pandemic through Monday of each week.

Number admitted include the number of hospital admissions with COVID-19 in in the stated 7 days.

Mechanical ventilation (daily average) is the average daily number of hospitalized individuals with COVID-19 who are using machines to help them breathe in the stated 7 days.

Total deaths are the total number of people who have died from COVID-19 in New Mexico since the beginning of the pandemic through Monday of each week. As the receipt and processing of death certificates may take days to weeks, the number of recorded deaths in recent weeks is incomplete.

Deaths in the 28 days describes the number of people who have died from COVID19 in between the stated 28 days

Deaths per 100,000 is the number of COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 residents reported in the stated 28 days.

Total tests are the number of COVID-19 tests from a laboratory or medical facility that confirms current COVID-19 infection (molecular [PCR, NAAT] and antigen tests) received by the state since the beginning of the pandemic through Monday.  Home-based test results are not included.

Percent positivity is the percentage of Nucleic Acid Amplification tests (PCR) that are positive in the stated 7 days.
